The Position:

The Programme Associate Gender post is based in UNFPA Bangladesh, Cox’s Bazar office. S/he shall directly report to the Programme Specialist - Gender, under the overall supervision of the GBViE Team Lead.

Job Purpose:

Gender-based violence (GBV) increases in emergency situations. People affected by natural disasters or armed conflict, who are forced to leave their homes, are subjected to trauma and the breakdown of societal ties and societal norms. Women and girls may be separated from family members, and may be exposed to multiple risks of violence. This was also the case in 2017, when around one million Rohingya refugees crossed the border from Myanmar and reached the area of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Refugees, especially women and girls, were disproportionately affected by forms and patterns of GBV including rape, conflict-related sexual violence, intimate partner violence, sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation, child and forced marriages, sexual exploitation, survival sex, and forced engagement in drug and sex trade. Additional challenges for Rohingya women and girls included access to sexual and reproductive health services.

UNFPA, as the lead agency on gender-based violence in emergencies, provides comprehensive gender-based services to Rohingya women and girls, together with partners. The services include GBV case management, integrated health response to GBV as well as psychosocial counseling, and more.

UNFPA Bangladesh is looking for a Programme Associate - Gender to provide coordination, administrative and secretariat support to the Gender Based Violence in Emergencies (GBViE) and Gender Based Violence Sub-Sector (GBV-SS) teams in the Cox’s Bazar Sub-Office of UNFPA Bangladesh. The Programme Associate - Gender will contribute to a dynamic GBViE/GBV-SS team in Cox's Bazar by providing administrative support in close collaboration with the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and adolescent and youth (A&Y)  units in Cox’s Bazar as well as the Gender Unit based in Dhaka. The Programme Associate - Gender will work closely with implementing partners for the effective coordination and provision of GBV response and prevention services to Rohingya and host communities.
