The Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) is a nationwide initiative that tracks and reviews maternal and neonatal deaths, including stillbirths, to promote safe motherhood and help end preventable maternal and newborn mortality. Led by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with support from UNFPA, UNICEF, WHO, and other development and implementing partners, professional societies, the programme leverages real-time data to inform policy decisions and strengthen the health system. Since its national rollout in 2016, MPDSR has been expanded to all 64 districts, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to reduce maternal and neonatal deaths by 2030. Each year, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) publishes a national MPDSR report. The recently released 2023 report highlights key achievements and significant activities carried out under the MPDSR programme across the country.
