Ching Marma's smile radiates as she returns home from school. A recent graduate, she is celebrated in her community as a courageous change-maker, an individual who stands up against adversity to pave the way for progress and inclusion.

Ching and her family, like many others in their region, recently experienced the devastating impact of a flash flood in Bandarban. The calamity forced them, along with their community, to seek refuge on the streets and in schools.

The floodwaters left their modest home, much like many others in the area, in devastation.

"We used plastic sheets to stay dry," she recounts. "Rain, thunderstorms, and stifling heat—we endured it all. There was no electricity, we faced food shortages and challenges in accessing clean sanitation and water. My nights were lit by candlelight, even when I went  to the washroom. It was a difficult situation, something I had never experienced. I was often scared during the dark hours."

Natural disasters exacerbate pre-existing vulnerabilities, particularly affecting women and girls. In response to the Bandarban flash flood, with support from the Australian government, UNFPA distributed life-saving Menstrual Health Management kits (MHM).

For Ching, the flashlight she received in the MHM kit has become her constant companion, providing invaluable support for her night time studies and safety.

She adds "The menstrual pads that I received were very helpful in these difficult times, especially when I had to manage my menstrual hygiene and seek comfort."

These essential items, including soap, a toothbrush, and panties, have played a crucial role in enabling Ching to focus on her wellbeing.

Today, Ching Marma and her family have returned to their damaged home, still grappling with the aftermath of the flash flood. Her parents, who are farmers, struggle to find work after their crops were destroyed by the floodwaters. Ching has temporarily set aside her dreams and passion for cycling, focusing on her studies and household chores during the day.

But as the day progresses, Ching's determination shines through. In the evenings, she cares for her cherished chickens and ducks, tending to their needs.

She shares, "Now, my parents are working tirelessly to rebuild our home, and I hope that it will happen soon so I can refocus on my dreams." Her dreams, she reminds us, go beyond cycling. She yearns to continue her studies and be an active part of her family's progress.
