Country Factsheet: Exploring preconditions for Gender-biased Sex Selection

Today, around 126 million women are believed to be "missing" around the world – the result of son preference and genderbiased sex selection (GBSS), a form of discrimination that reflects the persistent low status of women and girls. The resulting gender imbalance also has a damaging effect on societies. Instances of increased sexual violence and trafficking have already been linked to the phenomenon. UNFPA is calling for renewed attention to the issue at a global level, and is accelerating efforts to develop programmes and policies that end all forms of discrimination, including son preference and gender-biased sex selection.

Situation Report | Rohingya Humanitarian Response Programme Cox's Bazar (June- July)

Situation Report

Since August 2017, more than 745,000 Rohingya refugees have fled into Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh after decades of systematic discrimination, statelessness and targeted violence in Rakhine State, Myanmar.
● Around 1,242,400 people are in need and targeted. Of those, 55% are children (0 - 17 years) and 41% are adults (18 - 59 years) with 4% elderly people (>59 years)1​ ​. Most refugees are ​women and girls (52%) with 29,818 pregnant women (2.4%) and 304,388 women and girls of reproductive age (24%).
● A severe dengue outbreak in Dhaka is happening at this time. As of 31s​ t July, there are 17 confirmed cases from Cox’s Bazar district; however, several of these were likely acquired in Dhaka. One death from Sadar hospital was reported but also most likely acquired their illness in Dhaka. The Community Health Working Group (CHWG) is providing advice to the community on dengue signs, symptoms and cleanliness.

Summary Report: Reproductive Age Mortality Study (RAMOS)

Technical Reports and Document

The main purpose of this study was to obtain accurate estimates of the number of Pregnancy-Related Deaths (PRD) and documenting the cause  and associated conditions among all women of reproductive age (WRA) who died within the first year after the influx of the Rohingya Population, (September 2017 – August 2018) in Cox's Bazar Bangladesh. This study also aimed to establish a foundation of the surveillance system that will lead to adequate and effective responses.
