28 August 2017 - UNFPA Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat jointly organized a local-level consultation meeting at Pirganj Upazila of Rangpur District on "Reducing Maternal Mortality by Eliminating Child Marriage."

Approximately 300 participants, including school teachers, local elected members, local government officials, marriage registers, youth, NGO and CS representatives attended the event.

The Honourable Speaker of the Parliament was present as Chief Guest and three Members of Parliament who are also members of the Bangladesh Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (BAPPD). The Civil Surgeon of Rangpur District presented the key note paper on the issue.

The Acting Representative of UNFPA Bangladesh, Mr. Iori Kato, handed over 200 Clean Delivery Kits, which contain essential equipment for health personnel to safely manage childbirth and post-natal care, for the flood affected people of Pirganj to the Speaker who is also the elected member of Parliament from this constituency.  She received this on behalf of the people of Pirganj.

UNFPA is set to provide another 800 kits and to support the Government of Bangladesh in reducing maternal mortality and ending child marriage.
